Infosys founder Narayana Murthy has ignited a social media debate with his advice to young people to work "70 hours a week." His wife, Sudha Murty, chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and a novelist, supported his stance, citing his own history of working 80-90 hours per week and his belief in the value of genuine effort. Murthy argued that India’s low productivity rates necessitate increased working hours among the younger generation.
While longer working hours can boost output, they can also lead to early burnout and reduced productivity due to fatigue. Data from developed countries shows that higher productivity can be achieved with fewer working hours, whereas emerging markets often experience lower productivity and longer working hours.
Murthy’s statement emphasized three key areas: longer working hours, national productivity, and global competitiveness. This book investigates these themes alongside questions of achievement motivation, productivity, labor productivity, and Gross Manufacturing Value Added (GMVA) growth. It also examines the Government of India’s initiatives to enhance GMVA and foster patriotism.
A guide for aspiring entrepreneurs, this book highlights India's unique position as a potential global economic powerhouse. With a population of over 1.3 billion, a vibrant culture, a growing technology sector, and pro-entrepreneurial policies, India offers significant opportunities. The youth of India, with their creativity, drive, and determination, can shape the future of their nation and the world.
Key questions explored in this book include:
1. Is it the working hours or productivity that matters more for the nation?
2. Is labor productivity or GMVA more crucial for national growth?
3. Why is GMVA growth critical above all else?
4. How can a nation improve its GMVA?
5. What schemes has the Government of India implemented to boost GMVA?
6. How does enhancing patriotism contribute to national success?
7. What factors are vital in fostering patriotism?
8. Can a nation focus on patriotism when a significant portion of its population lives in poverty?
This book delves into the interplay between hard work, productivity, and patriotism, offering insights for the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs aiming to make their mark on the world.
